Dylan O’Keeffe has solidified second place in the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia standings with another overall podium – his fourth in five rounds – at The Bend on the weekend.
After setting the fastest time in Friday morning’s opening practice session, a self-confessed error from O’Keeffe in qualifying saw him landing fourth and eighth on the grid for the weekend’s opening two races.
“In qualifying, I was on a lap good enough for pole based on my sector times, but I backed out of it to give myself more space in the traffic for my next lap, which was a mistake on my part,” O’Keeffe said.
In the opening race, O’Keeffe scored a solid third place, but was able to capitalise on some chaos early in Race 2 to make up three spots.
“There were a couple of incidents early in the second race which worked to my advantage, although it became harder to make up positions as the race progressed,” he said.
O’Keeffe’s consistent results in the first two races saw the Dexion Porsche lining up third on the grid for the weekend’s final race, with O’Keeffe maintaining his position to cross the line third and secure a podium for the round.
“Overall, I would describe the weekend as solid,” O’Keeffe said.
“I didn’t maximise qualifying and I take responsibility for that, but I felt that the team gave me a car good enough to bounce back strongly in the races and bank some valuable points.
“I still haven’t lost too much ground to the championship leader, but I’ll be needing some more race wins over the final three rounds if I’m to win the title.”
The next Carrera Cup round is at the holy grail of Australian motorsport, the Repco Bathurst 1000, on 9-12 October.
